What is Nebraska unclaimed money?

Since 2011, Nebraska State Treasurer Don Stenberg has worked to fulfill his pledge to “make every effort to return unclaimed property to the Nebraskans to whom it belongs,” with more than $7 million being returned thus far in 2017 alone. This may sound like a considerable sum, but it is only a small portion of the remaining $170 million worth of unclaimed property currently held by the Nebraska state treasury office. The Nebraska unclaimed money program holds an assortment of personal assets, owed to individuals, that have been deemed “lost” or “abandoned.” These lost or unclaimed assets exist in a variety of different forms, such as unpaid wages, uncashed checks, death benefits, paid-up life insurance, tax refunds, social security payments, bank accounts, stocks, and even the contents of safe deposit boxes.
